    “A Month Before You Move”

Moving is stressful enough without putting yourself through extra aggravation.  One key – get the process started well in advance.  Here’s a list of things that should be done at least a month before you move.

Do a full-court press on paperwork.  Get copies of things like medical records, dental records, kids’ school records, pet vet records and legal documents.  Put them in a place where they’ll be easy to find.  Contact organizations where you hold memberships, such as fitness centers, to see how to transfer, sell or cancel your agreement.  Start dialogue with your insurance agents to protect your assets and property(s) during this transition.  Create a moving file and track your expenses for possible tax deductions.

Catalogue your stuff.  Identify your valuables and hard-to-replace items and give thought to how you’ll move them.  Start sorting, with an eye toward important categories including “yard sale,” “donate,” “pitch” and “won’t use ‘til after the move.”  Make sure you start using items that won’t make the trip, such as frozen foods and cleaning supplies.

With an organized start, your move will be more manageable and you’ll have the time you need to transition mailing addresses and utilities, book a mover, plan your goodbyes and handle the hundreds of other small details that are part of the moving experience.  For more help, U-Pack Moving has a detailed 8 week moving checklist at their website here.
