Can That Car Pass YOUR Inspection?

When it’s time to purchase a used car, a thorough inspection is a critical step.  Once you’ve determined that the vehicle is priced fairly and has what you’re looking for, set a  time to give the car a formal, thorough inspection.  If this is beyond your comfort level, take the car to a trusted mechanic, or bring along someone who’s at home looking under the hood.

TrustMyMechanic.com has a great checklist you should bring along to help you flag any trouble spots involving engine, brakes, tires, body and a whole lot more.  Here are a few more tricks of the trade to make use of –
    •    If it’s a private owner, arrive early for your appointment.  You might surprise the seller doing last minute touch-ups.
    •    Try to schedule your inspection first thing in the morning to evaluate starting performance after the car has been sitting overnight.
    •    Be sure to look at the vehicle in daylight, when it’s easier to spot potential problems.
    •    Take a moderate speed test drive to evaluate steering, engine, brakes and transmission.  Wind down windows and listen for unusual sounds or a loud engine.

If the prospect fails your inspection, you have the opportunity to pass on a potentially bad deal or negotiate a reduction in price, based on your findings.
