Saving What You've Got

Responsible Consumption Is Green and Saves Green

You might be surprised to realize that by living a greener lifestyle, it’s also easier to save some “green” through the concept of Responsible Consumption.  Considering the environmental impact of purchases often leads to a more economical use of the products you buy.  The best approach for reaching a Responsible Consumption state-of-mind is an evolving attitude, not a literal checklist.  When you begin to approach consumer habits with a responsible mindset, you are likely to go green and save green at the same time.

Here are three examples:  Locally produced foods are often more affordable because less money is spent on gasoline & shipping, pesticides, marketing and extensive packaging.  Second-hand items such as furniture and clothing extend the lives of products at a cheaper price for buyers.  Consuming filtered tap water instead of bottled alternatives is more affordable and eliminates the cost of bottling production and shipping.  .

Greenermind.org has an online resource dedicated to Responsible Consumption.  They urge you to reflect on the following questions.  What did I buy today?  How did I live today?  What did I throw out today?  How did I move today?  And how did I think today?  To find out more and see 23 Responsible Consumption actions you can take, click here.
